WA Intern Paper – Canada & Guatemala
Juhi Shah – August 2020
I am Juhi Shah, a student of Masters in International Development at the University of Waterloo, Canada. My research interest includes working on gender equality by providing sustainable opportunities to women. As part of my course, I interned with World Accord from May to August 2020, where I worked with indigenous women’s organizations and further explored my research interest. During the course of the internship, working with indigenous women in Guatemala for small project proposals, led me to write a paper titled, “Sexual Gender Based Violence in Indigenous women in Canada and Guatemala.” The paper focuses on a history of gender based violence in Canada and Guatemala and the present state of affairs for indigenous women in these countries. It looks into the existing international and national frameworks that protect women’s rights and indigenous’ rights. Furthermore, the paper provides recommendations for inclusion of indigenous women and reducing gender based violence in the two countries mentioned.
